The National Trail

The Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail is an unbroken 84-mile signposted footpath stretching coast-to-coast and crossing England from Wallsend in the east to Bownesson-Solway in the west. It passes through some of England’s most beautiful and dynamic landscapes, from rolling fields and rugged moorland to the vibrant cities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Carlisle.

Our campsite is positioned midway, and if you want to see some of the best parts of Hadrian's wall on your walk, then you are in luck ... they are within a stone's throw of Herding Hill Farm! You can start or finish your walk from here, or just make a pit-stop. Whatever you decide, we'll be delighted to see you.

The Pennine Way

The Pennine Way National Trail is a 268 mile (429 Km) walking route from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. It crosses some of the finest upland landscapes in England, from the Peak District, through the Yorkshire Dales, across the North Pennines and over Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland to the Cheviots.

The Trail passes through three National Parks, The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, two National Nature Reserves and 20 Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The variety of habitats make it one of the best places in Europe to observe birds like breeding waders in the spring and early summer.

There are official Guide Books for the National Trails produced by Aurum Press. The guides are regularly updated and all details are checked by the trail managers. The books include sections of Ordnance Survey 1:25,00 maps and are the very best accompaniment to your walk. You can buy them from the National Trails shop.

We are the ideal base camp

You do not have to walk all of the Trail in one go, although many people do. It is just as popular as a short-stay destination, perhaps walking a section over a long weekend, or for a day walk. Herding Hill Farm is in a perfect location whichever alternative you choose.

The Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site have created a set of circular walks along the trail. This set of walks and itineraries presents some of the best walking in Hadrian’s Wall Country, and can be downloaded with the link above.

You can concentrate on the Wall itself or sample some of the hidden gems just waiting to be discovered – the choice is yours. Make a day of it by visiting some of the many historic sites and attractions along the walks and dwell awhile for refreshment at the cafés, pubs and restaurants that you will come across. Just pick the walks that suit you and enjoy yourself! Then, at some point, you come here, have a shower or sauna, eat one of our home-made pizzas, dry any wet clothes or boots in our drying room, and get a good night's sleep in one of our wigwams or tipis. Job done!
